Transporting Goods Safely – Load Security

Transport Goods Safely

Guidance on how to load and secure cargo in your van legally and safely, from weight distribution to anchoring points and preventing overload.

Loading a Luton body van safely A ‘Luton Body’ van is ideal for bigger moves.

Safely transporting cargo in your van involves more than just loading it in and setting off. Correct distribution and securing of loads is not only sensible—it is a legal requirement.

The Road Traffic Act 1991 introduced offences for unsafe loads, reflecting how seriously load safety is viewed. Every year in the UK, over 4,000 successful prosecutions are brought against drivers and operators for unsafe loads. Maximum penalty: £5,000 fine, 3 penalty points and possible disqualification.

If you breach regulations, your van insurance may not cover damage or injury caused by an unsafe load.

Common sense goes a long way

  • Distribute the load evenly: Avoid piling goods near doors or too high. Keep the van’s centre of gravity low for stability when cornering.
  • Use anchoring points: Strap and secure cargo to prevent damage and stop items moving around during an accident or sudden stop.
  • Fit a bulkhead or barrier: Prevents loads entering the driver’s area. Netting or plywood can work, but vehicles like the Ford Transit Connect offer built-in safety cages.
  • Secure external loads: If strapping ladders or equipment outside, ensure they are tightly fastened and clearly visible to other drivers.
  • Avoid overloading: Exceeding the van’s maximum weight compromises braking, suspension and fuel consumption.
