The ‘Vantrepreneurs’

The Vantrepreneurs

Survey results and industry insights reveal how van drivers are redefining the old “white van man” stereotype as health-conscious, tech-savvy business professionals.

Back in 2006, an insurance company survey of 500 UK van owner-drivers revealed a new group of business professionals—dubbed “Vantrepreneurs”. Far from the old “white van man” stereotype, they were healthier, better educated, and often ran their vans as mobile offices. Nearly 25% held degrees or professional qualifications.

Fast forward ten years, and image is everything. Vans now double as rolling adverts, with striking liveries and branding. Technology such as Bluetooth, sat-nav and on-board computers has made vans true communications hubs.

“Advanced auto braking systems, airbags, traction control, reversing cameras and heated seats have transformed the driving experience,” noted Andrew Kennedy, Maun Motors Manager. “High-end vans can be as luxurious as cars—with leather interiors, iPod connectivity and flexible seating.”

Driving a business

Van ownership has grown with easier finance and a thriving start-up culture. Vantrepreneurs now run everything from delivery services to catering vans, mobile workshops, valeting and repairs. Many also pursue franchises, adding flexibility and growth opportunities.

Check the legalities

A van-based business is exciting, but compliance is key. Check with local authorities about licences, and ensure your commercial vehicle insurance covers your business use, modifications, and any overnight storage of goods.

The number of vans on the road continues to grow, driving businesses and industry forward. Perhaps you’re already on the way to becoming a successful Vantrepreneur?
